WHO? WHY? WHAT? WHEN?

An Amazing Man…

John C. Scully (USF School of Law Class ’91) was killed at the young age of 28 in the 101 California Street massacre on July 1, 1993.

Less than a year after their wedding in Honolulu John used his own body to shield his wife, Michelle Scully Hobus (USF School of Law Class ‘92), from the shooters gunfire.

John was not only a hero and an amazing husband.  He also worked and played with passion. Work, fun, family and friends were all important to him. He especially enjoyed sports, the ocean and outdoors.

He was a beautiful example of what it means to be a good person and a good lawyer.

That is why we still remember, love, honor and miss him today.

A Worthy Cause…

Shortly after John’s tragic death, a group of John’s USF School of Law classmates established the John Scully Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Each year since it’s inception in 1994, a law student who exudes John’s academic excellence and love for sports and  the outdoors is awarded the Scholarship.

In memory of the 25th anniversary of John’s passing, the Scholarship we  seek to raise an additional $25,000 to $50,000 for the Scholarship to enable us to help more USF law students as  tuition and other education costs continue to escalate.

A Fun Event…

Given John’s fun, easy-going spirit and love for life, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate his memory, his loyalty, and the work-life balance he stood for then by having a Hawaiian themed party in his honor.

Join us as we connect, celebrate life, and raise funds for the John Scully Memorial Scholarship.

This not to miss event will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 in Danville, California  at a private home so space is limited.   Don’t wait secure your spot now by clicking on the  DONATE button on this page.

SAN FRANCISCO — Mortally wounded and horrified, John Scully tried one last time to help his wife as she frantically tried to call police from an office phone during a gunman’s rampage.

“He tried to give me directions, then he said, ‘I’m dying,’ and we said our goodbys,” a tearful Michelle Scully told the San Francisco Examiner in an interview published Sunday.

Less than a year after their wedding in Honolulu, the young couple watched Thursday as Gian Luigi Ferri began his assault at the Pettit & Martin law firm, where John Scully worked.

Michelle Scully had planned to study at the firm until John’s shift ended. She had settled in with some reference books in an empty 33rd-floor office when her 28-year-old husband burst in and yelled: “You’ve got to get out, they’ve heard shots!”

WHAT IS THE JOHN SCULLY MEMORIAL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP?

WHAT IS THE JOHN SCULLY MEMORIAL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP?

The Scully Scholarship Fund (“Scholarship”) was established in 1994 after John Scully was tragically killed in the 101 California shooting.   The Scholarship was initiated by a group of John’s USF School of Law classmates.  In 1994, a large fundraiser was held at Bimbo’s in San Francisco.

In 2003, the Scholarship was endowed by USF.  Since its inception, at least one law student a year is awarded the Scholarship for exuding John’s love of the outdoors, academic excellence and work-life balance.   The typical yearly gift to the recipient is in the range of $3000 – $4000.

In memory of the 25th anniversary of John’s passing, the Scholarship committee would like to raise an additional $25,000 – $50,000 more for the Scholarship. Your gift, will go a long way in helping deserving USF “lawyers to be” with the many costs associated with Law School and help keep John’s memory and values for the outdoors and work-life balance alive.

Donations of any amount are welcome throughout the year and are appreciated.

You can use the donate button to contribute at anytime.  But please remember to identify your contribution as going to the John Scully Memorial Scholarship Fund on the USF Donation Site.
